Why “simple braids” always win

When I want my hair to look like I tried (but I actually didn’t), I go straight to simple braid hairstyles. They’re quick, they hold up through a long day, and they instantly make even a basic outfit feel more put-together. Plus, braids are one of the easiest ways to get that “effortless texture” vibe without heat. ✨

This post is basically my go-to braid rotation: a clean French braid tutorial moment, a fun bubble braid with a mini braid threaded through, cozy messy braids for that relaxed look, and my favorite “I need it done fast” style: Dutch braid buns. Everything here is beginner-friendly, and I’m keeping the steps super practical.

Before you start: tiny prep that makes braids 10x easier

I used to think braiding was just “grab hair and go,” but a few small tweaks make a huge difference in how neat (or intentionally messy) the braid turns out.

1) Brush, then add a little grip
If hair is super silky, braids can slide out. I like to braid on day-2 hair, or I lightly rough it up by running my fingers through the roots. If you have naturally textured hair, you’re already winning here.

2) Decide your vibe: sleek vs. soft
Sleek braids look polished and tight. Soft braids look romantic and lived-in. Neither is “better,” but choosing first helps you control tension while braiding.

3) Sectioning is everything
Even if I’m doing a messy braid, I still start with clean sections. It’s the difference between “cute messy” and “I fought my hair and lost.”

4) Keep a few basics nearby
Hair ties, a couple pins, and a mirror you can angle (or use your phone camera) help a lot. If you’re learning, stopping to re-check the back saves time later.

Simple French braid tutorial (the classic for a reason)

This is the braid I do when I want my hair off my face and I want it to stay there. It’s also the foundation for so many other styles, so once this clicks, everything gets easier.

Step 1: Start at the crown
Take a section from the top of your head (like a triangle-ish section). Split it into three equal strands: left, middle, right.

Step 2: Begin like a normal braid
Cross the right strand over the middle, then the left strand over the middle. Keep your hands close to the scalp so it stays secure.

Step 3: Add hair as you go
Here’s the French braid part: every time you cross a side strand over the middle, add a bit of loose hair into that side strand first. So you’re basically “feeding” the braid from both sides.

Step 4: Keep tension consistent
If you want a neat French braid, keep the tension even and don’t let sections balloon. If you want it softer, braid normally first, then gently pull at the edges later.

Step 5: Finish and secure
Once you run out of hair to add, continue with a regular three-strand braid to the ends and tie it off.

My quick fixes if it feels hard:
If my arms get tired, I pause and hold the braid with one hand while I reset my grip. If the braid looks uneven, it’s usually because the sections I’m adding aren’t consistent—smaller sections = more detailed braid; bigger sections = faster braid.

Bubble braid + mini braid threaded through (my favorite “elevate it” trick)

This style is exactly what it sounds like: a bubble braid, but with a tiny braid running through it. It looks extra, but it’s honestly one of the quickest upgrades I know. It’s giving “I planned this,” even when I didn’t. 🫶🏼

Step 1: Create a small braid first
Pick a thin section from one side (or from the top if you want it centered). Do a simple three-strand mini braid and secure the end with a small tie. Keep it long enough to reach down the length of your ponytail.

Step 2: Pull hair into a ponytail
Place the ponytail where you want the bubble braid to start—mid or high works great. Smooth it lightly with your hands.

Step 3: Attach the mini braid
Lay the mini braid on top of the ponytail (or slightly off-center). Secure it near the base with a pin or tuck it under the first elastic so it’s anchored.

Step 4: Make the bubbles
Add another hair tie a few inches down. Then gently tug the hair between the two ties outward to form a “bubble.” Repeat down the ponytail.

Step 5: Thread the mini braid through (the fun part)
As you create each bubble, guide the mini braid through the center area so it looks like it’s woven through the bubbles. You can keep it straight down the middle or slightly zig-zag it for dimension.

How I make bubbles look fuller:
I tug outward from multiple angles, not just the sides. Think: left, right, top, bottom—tiny pulls, then step back and check symmetry.

Messy braids (cozy, soft, and actually wearable)

Messy braids are my go-to when I want a relaxed look that still feels styled. They’re perfect when hair isn’t freshly washed, and they look even better when a few face-framing pieces fall out naturally. 🍁☕️

Option A: One loose side braid
This is the easiest “messy braid” entry point.

Step 1: Part hair slightly off-center.
Step 2: Bring all hair over one shoulder.
Step 3: Do a basic three-strand braid, but don’t pull tight.
Step 4: Secure the end, then gently pull on the outer edges of the braid to widen it.

Option B: Two messy braids (soft pigtail braids)
This one gives a cute, casual vibe and works especially well for medium hair.

Step 1: Part hair down the middle (it doesn’t have to be perfect).
Step 2: Braid each side loosely.
Step 3: Pancake the braids (gently pull the edges) for that airy look.
Step 4: Pin any short layers that pop out in a way you don’t like—or leave them if you want it extra undone.

My messy braid rule: braid first, mess up second. If I try to start messy, it usually turns into uneven sections. If I start structured and then loosen, it looks intentional.

Dutch braid buns (the “I need a tutorial asap” hairstyle)

Dutch braid buns look impressive, but the steps are super repeatable once you get the hand motion. The key difference: in a Dutch braid, you cross strands under the middle (not over), so the braid sits on top and looks more raised.

Step 1: Part hair down the middle
Split hair into two equal sections and clip one side away so it doesn’t get involved.

Step 2: Start your Dutch braid at the front
Take a section near the hairline on one side and split into three strands.

Step 3: Cross under + add hair
Cross the right strand under the middle, then the left strand under the middle. Each time you cross under, add a bit of hair to that strand first (same “feeding” idea as a French braid, just the crossing direction changes).

Step 4: Braid to the nape
Continue until you reach the base of your neck. Then finish with a regular braid for a couple inches and secure with a tie.

Step 5: Twist into a bun
Wrap the braid into a bun at the nape (or slightly higher if you want it perkier). Pin it down securely.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side
Try to match the height and direction of the first bun, but don’t stress about perfect symmetry—slight differences look cute and natural.

Make it look fuller (especially for fine hair):
Before you bun it, gently pull the outer edges of the Dutch braid to widen it. Then twist into the bun. This makes the buns look bigger without needing extra hair.

Common braid problems (and what I do instead of restarting)

“My braid is bumpy at the top.”
That usually means the first section was too big or tension changed. I smooth the crown with my fingers and redo only the first two crossings, not the whole braid.

“My arms get tired and everything falls apart.”
I pause and secure the braid temporarily with a clip or even a hair tie, then continue. It’s not cheating, it’s strategy.

“My braid looks skinny.”
I pancake it. Even a basic braid can look twice as thick with gentle edge-pulling. Small pulls, step back, repeat.

“Layers are sticking out.”
For sleek styles, I tuck and pin. For messy braids, I let a few pieces live their life—sometimes that’s the whole vibe.

How I choose which braid to do (based on the day)

If I need hair fully secured: French braid.
If I want something fast but different: bubble braid + mini braid threaded through.
If I’m going for cozy and soft: messy side braid or messy double braids.
If I want the most “wow” with minimal effort: Dutch braid buns.

These are the styles I rotate constantly because they’re simple, they photograph well, and they work for real life—errands, school, work, or just wanting to feel a little more put together in five minutes. ✨
